The Hunt is On

As part of Keeley's W.H.I.R.T.Y. read-a-thon, I'm bringing a slight variation of "Why Haven't I Reviewed That Yet"!
I intend to bring an extra highlight to all those books that I have read, but not posted a review for.
Between the 11th - 17th May, I will be posting a new book every day.

The sixth in my W.H.I.R.T.Y. week is The Hunt is On, by Natalie Herzer.
Yet another freebie I downloaded from Amazon back in July 2013.

So read on and enjoy!

The Hunt is On (Patroness #2)

by Natalie Herzer

4 out of 5

Synopsis
Book 2 in the Patroness Series:

Maiwenn Cadic has her hands full.

The Turn is a few weeks ahead and the world seems to be literally coming apart at the seams - natural disasters and weird phenomena keep everyone on edge. An unusually high number of missing persons is thought to be just another side effect but is making Maiwenn nervous.

When all fingers point to the Queen of the Undead, Maiwenn is once again forced to join forces with Kylian, new leader of the Paris shapeshifter pack.

Sharp-tongued and sharp-fanged conflicts follow...

Review
Maiwenn is the Patroness - the woman who polices the paranormal residents in Paris, and makes sure they are living peacefully alongside humans.  Which works most of the time.  But now people are disappearing all over Paris, and everything points to a supernatural cause.

I confess that I started to read this book before I realised that it was the second in the series.  But I can safely say that it holds its own.  There was enough in it that I didn't feel lost, but with just enough questions raised that I went back and bought the first book.  (And I'm kinda glad I did it in that order, Blue Moon Rising feels alot more rough around the edges, and I might have been put off continuing the series if I'd read that first)

This is set in reality where witches, vampires, werewolves, fairies and all manner of supernatural creature exists.  For the most part, they are just trying to get on with their lives, whether they're living in the underground court of the vampire queen; or on one of the shifter reservations.  Or even if they're living alongside humans and opening up flower shops for a living.

The problem is the Turn is coming.  I'm not 100% sure on what will happen with the Turn, but I believe it's a phenomena that comes around once every millenia or so; and it drops the wall between the mortal and magic lands, and any creature with a drop of magical blood in their body will... lose control?  Become more magic?
I'm not quite sure, I think I need to read it again.
All I can say is that it's a well-played aspect that is hanging over everybody's head throughout the series.

As well as the above drama, The Hunt is On finds Maiwenn teaming up with Paris' police new supernatural department, to uncover the disappearances of people and creatures throughout the city.

It's a fantastic world to get immersed in.  We follow Maiwenn as she tracks down clues and suspects, and when she had to team up with Kylian - head of the local Shifter clan.  It is entertaining to read the interaction and chemistry between the two.
The supporting cast are all fantastic, making this investigative drama light and amusing in all the right places.
