Synopsis
Mahlorie hates her braces. And who cares what she looks like anyway? Her parents sure do. Dad, a travelling magician, and Mom, a famous erotica author, constantly harp on the importance of appearance. Her best friend Shai is the epitome of pop-culture, crushing on every boy with a cute smile. But when Mal has a near-death experience and can suddenly hear a boy’s voice in her head, life takes a turn for the weird. He can hear her too. How did her braces become transmitters? And who is this boy she just might be falling in love with?

This magical coming-of-age tale of mystery and self-discovery, and love and friendship, makes the impossible become all too real. For fans of "The Fault in Our Stars" and "Everything, Everything."

Review
Mahlorie has gotten perfectly good at sticking her head in the sand, and letting life pass her by; but a near-death experience forces her to step up.

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Well, huh. I don't know what I was expecting, but that wasn't it.
The book is charming, funny, and easy to read. And then it hits you in the feels.

I really enjoyed this book, which follows Mahlorie, a fifteen-year-old girl who is living in the shadow of her parents. Her mum is a famous writer, and media darling; and her dad is a magician that loves to perform. Often, Mahlorie is left feeling second-place, as her parents are always away doing what they do. As a result, Mahlorie becomes very withdrawn. She has her best friend Shea, but spends the rest of her time at school being invisible.
Despite this, Mahlorie is really funny and an entertaining narrator, as she takes you through her life with a dry humour.

Mahlorie wears braces and hates them, and I could sympathise with her at all times. I ended up reminiscing my brace-wearing years, and my teeth are still aching!
Unfortunately, my braces didn't allow me to talk to people, like Mahlorie's do, after a near miss with some lightning.

I don't really want to say any more, because I don't want to spoil it.
This book is written is such a simple and straight-forward way, Mahlorie was my best friend within a couple of chapters. It's sweet, it's funny, and it's surprisingly meaningful. I would definitely recommend checking it out.
